Once again the topic of so called liberal crybabies is coming up in my conservative circle of friends. They are say that liberals are whining because they will loose their welfare and have to work for a living in Trumps new America. Now these individuals associate Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid with true Welfare which is called AFDC. What they don't realize is people receiving AFDC (which amounts to maybe $200.00/mo for a single person) are people who are waiting for a Disability Determination from Social Security, or are in school. AFDC for a single person who is not applying for Disability or in school is limited to 3 months at a time and they must be actively looking for employment during that time. Also to top that off there is a lifetime cap of 5 years for anybody receiving AFDC. Also with new automated computer matching software and access to state, federal databases the fraud rate by recipients across all entitlement programs from Social Security to SNAP to AFDC is less than 1%. Another prevailing conservative myth is drug use among recipients is higher among recipients then among those who work. This is false. Drug use among recipients is actually less than among the working class. Studies have disproved all these conservative talking points.
Now with that Said Social Security, and Medicare do not fall under the term Welfare they are federal insurance programs that are paid into when you are working and protect you against disability or old age. And again fraud rate among recipients is less than 1% and drug use among recipients is statistically insignificant.
SNAP / Food Stamps fall under farm subsidies and not welfare.
Medicaid is welfare.
Most Recipients receiving SNAP and Medicaid are either disabled or are working 2 or more jobs and not just making enough to disqualify them from these programs. And again fraud and drug use is statistically insignificant.
Now. If you are conservative and truly care about jobs think about all the people these programs employ beyond the recipients. All the health care professionals who's salaries are paid by medicaid and medicare dollars and what would happen to the overall economy if these programs are eliminated or severely cut. The unemployment rate and/or salaries among this newly displaced class of worker would drastically shift for the worse. Also all the industry that services the health care industry would also be negatively impacted. This would send shock waves and tsunamis across our entire economy.
If you truly want to fix these programs and not just eliminate them, then there are ways to accomplish that without cuts.
1) First and Foremost on Social Security to fix this program the nearly 4 Trillion borrowed by Reagan GHW Bush need to be returned to the fund with interest. And the FICA CAP needs to be scrapped. SS will become solvent for decades to come.
2) To further shore up SS we need to bring good paying full time jobs back to this country and then train the workforce to work these new jobs. This will further shore up not only SS but will shore up medicaid and medicare.
3) To save and fix medicaid and medicare we need to combine these programs and eliminate the means testing then allow this new combined program to negotiate drug pricing and negotiate with health care providers.
4) Further more to reduce pricing in health care we need to reform the health care industry as a whole.
In Closing there are options that don't necessarily require drastically raising taxes to accomplish and are very simple and doable without much negative impact on the overall economy. Just some common sense solutions to a currently relatively small problem at the moment but time is of the essence and these reforms would need to be nearly immediately implemented and we can't procrastinate years down the road or these solutions will no longer be possible.
